At an annual intelligence and national security summit this week in Maryland, the CIA deputy director, David Cohen, shared details about an unsuccessful plot.
“There was talk about a rather devious scheme to cause harm to a significant crowd, possibly numbering in the tens of thousands, at this concert.” There is speculation that a number of Americans may have been among the potential victims. According to Mr. Cohen, the plot was apparently well-developed.
“The Austrians were able to make those arrests because the agency and our partners in the intelligence community provided them with crucial information about the plans of this ISIS-connected group.”
Austrian officials have revealed that the main suspect in the case is a 19-year-old Austrian man who was reportedly influenced by the Islamic State group.
There are rumours circulating about a potential incident outside the stadium. It is said that someone had intentions to harm the large crowd of fans expected to gather there. The alleged plan involved the use of knives or homemade explosives. It’s rumoured that an additional 65,000 fans were expected to be inside the venue.
During a search of the suspect’s home, investigators stumbled upon some intriguing findings—a collection of chemical substances and an assortment of technical devices.
Austria’s interior minister Gerhard Karner recently discussed the importance of seeking support from external intelligence agencies. This is because Austrian investigators face legal restrictions when it comes to monitoring text messages, unlike their counterparts in certain foreign services.
There are some interesting claims being made by the suspect’s lawyer regarding the Austrian authorities and their motives. According to the lawyer, it seems that there may be an attempt to amplify the situation in order to obtain additional surveillance powers. Quite the scandalous accusation, isn’t it?

On 6 August, the authorities made a significant arrest involving the main suspect and a 17-year-old, which happened to coincide with the public announcement of the cancellations. There’s some news about another person, who is 18 years old, being caught on August 8th.

Swift finally addressed the cancellations last week, right after her London shows—the next stop after Vienna—had concluded.

She couldn’t help but share her appreciation for the authorities, recognising that their efforts ensured the safety of the concerts. She also mentioned that she decided to wait until the European leg of her Eras Tour was finished to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
“I want to emphasise this point: I won’t openly talk about certain things if I think it might encourage individuals who want to harm the fans attending my shows,” she stated.
