Sue Taylor-Franklin: From World Record Powerlifter to NHS Waitlist Struggle
Sue Taylor-Franklin, aiming once more to reclaim her title as one of the world’s strongest women, has faced significant challenges in her journey. At her peak, the 56-year-old could deadlift nearly a quarter of a tonne and even set a world record by pulling a 48-tonne aeroplane alongside her wife, Sam.
However, her career was suddenly jeopardized when a knee injury, sustained in a motorbike accident at the age of 17, resurfaced towards the end of 2021. Despite her urgent need for treatment, she was informed of a daunting five-year waiting period for NHS assistance.
In a determined effort to regain her health, Sue turned to online crowdfunding and successfully raised funds for a £10,000 operation in Lithuania. Reflecting on her experience, she now advocates for an overhaul of the UK’s health services, emphasizing that she “couldn’t get the help when I needed it.”
