An investigation has been opened against Jude Bellingham by UEFA over the player’s alleged breach of the basic rules of decent conduct, after which there was an apparent gesture to grab his crotch in front of the Slovakia bench during England’s round-of-16 win at Euro 2024 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Sunday.
A source has told ESPN that the gesture, which came after his stoppage-time equaliser, is unlikely to result in a ban from UEFA, with a fine most likely should he be found guilty.
Bellingham, 21, said on social media that the action was an “inside joke to friends,” but UEFA has instructed its disciplinary body to investigate the gesture.
Previous instances of this gesture by Cristiano Ronaldo and Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone in the Champions League in 2019 merely received fines of €20k, but no suspensions.
England are next in action against Switzerland in the quarterfinal in Düsseldorf on Saturday.
In a statement on Monday, UEFA said: “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has today opened a disciplinary investigation concerning a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct by the English Football Association player, Jude Bellingham, allegedly committed during the scope of this match.”
“Further information relating to this matter will be published in due course.”
Moreover, the English FA has also been charged with issues regarding supporters under UEFA disciplinary procedures, which occurred after the Slovakia game.
The UEFA added that it is investigating a “lack of order or discipline by supporters” and “lighting of fireworks.”
