Harry Kane Declares Peak Fitness, Addresses Criticism as England Prepares for Slovenia Clash in Euro 2024

England captain Harry Kane has confidently stated he is “as fit as I have all season” and “getting fitter with each game,” countering criticism of the national team’s performances at Euro 2024. Kane’s remarks follow England manager Gareth Southgate’s suggestion that the players are not physically fit enough, following underwhelming performances against Serbia and Denmark.

On Tuesday, England faces Slovenia in their final Group C match in Cologne. Despite the criticism, England is in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages. Southgate, however, has highlighted his players’ “limitations” and their struggle to maintain a pressing game due to their physical condition.

England’s Mixed Start at Euro 2024

England, among the favorites to win Euro 2024, began the tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over Serbia and a disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark. These performances have led to questions about the team’s fitness and ability to sustain high-intensity play.

When asked about his capacity to play at a high level throughout the tournament, Kane, who was substituted in the second half against Denmark, expressed confidence. “In the first game I felt as fit as I have all season. Of course, I know I came off [the pitch] in the second game, but that was down to the manager wanting to… maybe freshen up the front players especially. So, from my point of view I’m fit, getting better and better with each game and fitter with each game,” Kane said.

Recovery and Peak Performance

The Bayern Munich striker, who missed the end of the German domestic season with a back injury, emphasized the importance of peaking at the right time. “It’s more important to make sure you’re coming into your peak towards the most important part of the tournament which is the knockouts,” Kane noted.

Response to Criticism from Pundits

Kane also addressed comments from former England striker Gary Lineker,

who described the Three Lions’ performance against Denmark as “shit.” Kane urged Lineker and other critics to “remember what it was like to wear the shirt” before passing judgment on the current players. “It’s tough to play for England,” Kane said, highlighting the pressure and expectations on the national team.

As England prepares for their crucial match against Slovenia, Kane’s fitness and leadership will be pivotal. The team aims to secure a spot in the knockout stages and build momentum for the latter stages of Euro 2024.
