Hungary defeat Scotland to stay alive at Euro 2024

Scotland finished bottom with just a point as their wait for a first European Championship win since 1996 goes on.
Coach Steve Clarke was forced into one change for Scotland with Scott McKenna replacing the limping Kieran Tierney onto a stretcher due to injury in the hamstring during the 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

English-born Callum Styles was given a place in Hungary’s midfield after shaking off an injury to start, with Endre Botka also making his first appearance at the tournament on the right of a back three.
John McGinn explained how the team forfeited their pre-match nap due to thousands of Scotland supporters who were outside the hotel, singing songs in preparing anticipation for what they hoped was going to be a historic night.
With a run of 14 games unbeaten from November 2022 and March of this year, expectations from Hungary going into the Euros were heightened. They also beat England twice in the last UEFA Nations League and also defeated Germany away.

But successive defeats had taken the air out of their challenge, leaving Marco Rossi’s side needing to beat Scotland to keep alive their hopes of making the last 16.
Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn shovelled away a dipping drive from Bendeguz Bolla that bounced awkwardly in front of him, with Styles and then Willi Orban booked for cleaning out McGinn in a first half full of endeavour but limited in real chances.

That was until Che Adams’ dangerous clearance, because of a Hungary free-kick 25 yards out, which Dominik Szoboszlai clipped towards the far post with Orban’s header skimming the top of the crossbar.
Szoboszlai shrugged off injury concerns after sitting out Hungary’s final team training session to hammer over a strike through distance but Scotland’s first shot did not arrive until the 53rd minute.
Scotland defended doggedly as Jack Hendry blocked Roland Sallai’s attempt shifting in from the left before Marton Dardai headed over from a cross.

A horrifying incident left Varga prone on his back in the Scotland area as he tried to head a free-kick goalwards while Gunn came flying out, with Anthony Ralston also crashing to the ground.
It led to a lengthy stoppage as medics placed Varga in the recovery position before a sheet was draped around him as he was carried off on a stretcher.

The fourth official signalled 10 minutes of stoppage time, which sent both teams on a desperate search for the winner.
First, Gunn saved well from Andras Schafer and Szoboszlai, before Csoboth took a shot that rebounded off the post. Then, Scotland defender Grant Hanley had a shot parried by Peter Gulacsi and, at the other end, Csoboth steered home a cutback to break Scottish hearts.
