“Joey Barton Ordered to Pay Additional £35,000 to Jeremy Vine in Libel Case”
Joey Barton will pay an additional £35,000 in damages to settle a libel claim with broadcaster Jeremy Vine, as confirmed by Vine’s solicitors. The Radio 2 presenter sued Barton earlier this year after the former footballer posted a series of defamatory statements suggesting that Vine had a sexual interest in children.
In May, the High Court ruled that Barton’s posts were defamatory. On Tuesday, Barton issued a public apology and agreed to pay £75,000 in damages and legal costs. However, Vine later stated that this payment was “not the final outcome” of the case.
Judith Thompson of Samuels Solicitors explained that Barton would pay an additional £35,000 for posts published after Vine initiated legal action. “Mr. Barton responded to being served with Mr. Vine’s claim by making additional damaging and untrue publications about Mr. Vine and his legal complaints,” Thompson wrote.
This extended settlement underscores the serious consequences of defamatory statements and highlights the legal ramifications of continuing to post harmful content after legal proceedings have begun.
