The popular ITV dating show has sparked a trend in cosmetic surgeries, with teenagers, some as young as 15, seeking to emulate the appearance they see on TV.
There has been a noticeable surge in the demand for cosmetic surgery among women, particularly those who are younger. This trend is being attributed to what some are calling the “Love Island effect.”
There has been a rise in the number of high-street salons that now offer cosmetic surgery.
A popular reality TV show has inspired a growing trend among younger women to specifically seek out dermal filler packages to achieve a particular aesthetic.
A former contestant on the ITV dating show, Malin Andersson, has strong opinions about the potential dangers of cosmetic surgery.
Did you hear about her? Apparently, she couldn’t resist getting lip fillers, even though she started in her late teens.
“I began to experience a heightened sense of self-perception.” I’d glance at my reflection, noticing my lips, and wonder if they could use a little more volume. And then she couldn’t help but keep repeating it; she just had to keep going back for more,” she said.
According to her, there are numerous factors that influence women to alter their appearance through medical means. These include social media, the media, the news, online platforms, diet culture, and magazines.
However, she emphasised the importance of staying true to oneself.
“I decided to change my appearance because I felt that I didn’t receive enough love and care from my carers during my upbringing. I believed that altering how I look might help me find the love and acceptance I longed for.”
According to cosmetic aesthetics doctor Ed Robinson, there has been a significant increase in requests following the latest season of Love Island, particularly from a younger demographic.
“Thanks to Love Island, there has been a noticeable surge in younger individuals, particularly women, seeking dermal filler packages. It seems they are eager to emulate the appearance of Love Island contestants they’ve seen on television,” he remarked.
In his statement, he voiced his apprehension about the current trend, emphasising that aesthetic treatments should not be about trying to resemble someone else. To enhance your appearance, they focus on subtle changes that may not be immediately noticeable. However, it is important to customise these adjustments to your specific anatomy, and opting for more conservative procedures is definitely recommended.
However, this is a common occurrence, and the Kardashians are just one instance. Whenever someone reveals that they’ve had a treatment, it seems to pique the curiosity of many others.
According to Julie Cameron, associate director at the Mental Health Foundation in the United Kingdom, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of young people seeking cosmetic operations, which she considers a public health concern.
She claims that there is a concerning trend among young people to take on debt for permanent cosmetic procedures, which she believes can have negative impacts on both their physical and mental well-being.
“I find it quite concerning that there seems to be a growing trend of younger individuals making decisions about cosmetic procedures. It’s alarming to think that 15- and 16-year-olds are already considering getting lip fillers, especially when they have been following extensive face and skin routines since such a young age. It makes me wonder what the future holds in terms of their choices.”
