Tragically, a biking accident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, claimed the lives of an NHL star, 31, and Matthew, 29, who were both from Salem County. According to a wedding website, it seems like they were back in their hometown to fulfil the role of groomsmen in their sister’s wedding on Friday.
Johnny and Matthew were biking on Country Route 551 North just after 8 p.m. when a driver, who appeared to be intoxicated, tried to overtake another car and tragically struck the brothers, E. According to the police, the driver, Sean M. Higgins, has been charged with two counts of death by auto and has been arrested. The investigation is still ongoing.
The Blue Jackets made an announcement on Friday, Aug. 30, regarding the unfortunate deaths.
“This heartbreaking event deeply saddens the Columbus Blue Jackets.” Johnny was not just a talented hockey player, but more importantly, a devoted spouse, parent, child, sibling, and companion. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, Meredith, his children, Noa and Johnny, his parents, and their loved ones on the unexpected passing of Johnny and Matthew,” the statement expressed.
“Johnny’s enthusiasm for the game was palpable, evident to all who witnessed him on the ice.” He carried his passion for hockey with him throughout his career, from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets. He excited fans in a way that only Johnny Hockey could,” it continued.
The team expressed, “His influence on our organisation and our sport was significant, but it cannot compare to the lasting mark he left on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.” Johnny quickly became a beloved member of our community upon his arrival two years ago, and Columbus wholeheartedly embraced him.
His absence deeply saddens us, and we’re determined to stand by his family and our neighbourhood during this difficult time. Please keep the Gaudreau family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. It is important to respect their privacy as they mourn their loss.
Meredith, Johnny’s wife, and their two adorable children are still alive. Their daughter Noa will be turning 2 in October, while their son Johnny is just 7 months old.
Both brothers attended Boston College, with Johnny gaining recognition for his exceptional skills and winning the prestigious Hobey Baker Award in 2014. Following his college career, he made the leap to the professional level and was draughted by the Calgary Flames. Renowned for his exceptional skills on the ice, Johnny earned the nickname “Johnny Hockey.” He was a finalist for the prestigious Calder Memorial Trophy, which recognises the NHL’s top rookie, and in 2017, he claimed the esteemed Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for his outstanding offensive performance combined with exemplary sportsmanship. Did you hear the latest news? Gaudreau, who spent a whopping eight seasons with the Flames, just inked a juicy seven-year deal with none other than the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022. Talk about a major shakeup!
Matthew’s post-college journey has been quite eventful. After graduating from Boston College in 2017, he embarked on a career in professional sports. Over the years, he has had the opportunity to play for various minor league teams, with his most recent stint being with the Worcester Railers in 2022.
