I have always been someone who values their privacy very much. My friends often tease me for being quite reserved, but I do have my moments of opening up. What can I say? I’ve always been a private person, preferring to keep to myself and not share too much about my personal life. Now, two summer fashion trends are intruding upon my peaceful solitude: mesh shoes and, even worse, mesh bags.

It’s a nightmare for someone who prefers solitude. Designers, out of nowhere, have chosen to make it fashionable to reveal almost every aspect of oneself—from your toes to the clutter inside your handbag. Interestingly, I find myself quite fond of mesh shoes. These stylish mesh Alaïa flats have been spotted on celebrities like Katie Holmes, Jennifer Lawrence, and Dakota Johnson. They offer a fashionable option for those who want to show off their feet without wearing traditional summer sandals. However, the mesh-handbag trend is causing me great distress. I prefer to keep the contents of my bag a mystery, known only to me.

Consider this: What is the purpose of sharing the details of my ordinary daily life with someone I don’t know? Do you really need to know about my hidden collection of sweets, my extensive pile of CVS receipts, and my covert pineapple-flavored vape? Carrying a mesh bag is like revealing the chaos inside my mind, and as someone who values privacy, I’d rather go out empty-handed than expose my belongings for all to see.

I must admit, the mesh bag does have a certain chicness to it. Of course, if you’re only carrying a lip gloss, a sleek card holder, and your keys, then the transparent bag will definitely give off a cool vibe. (I must admit, I found the little mesh pouches from Proenza Schouler’s spring 2024 collection to be absolutely adorable.) Dua Lipa recently showcased a stylish Alaïa mesh outfit, complemented by a minimalist bag that added a modern twist to the timeless shoulder-bag design.

.

However, from my perspective, I would never be able to. I carry around too many random items on a daily basis—face mist, gum, eye drops—to ever achieve that effortless look. Perhaps it’s time for me to embrace the mesh-bag trend and use it as motivation to simplify my life, focusing only on the things that truly matter. However, to be completely honest, I have no desire to alter my naturally disorganized nature (I have a penchant for extravagance; feel free to judge me), and I prefer to keep my perpetual state of disorder concealed. So, fashion industry: It’s time to move on from the mesh trend! Allow me to embrace chaos without interference.
