As Spain’s squad celebrated their win over Georgia in front of their supporters in Cologne, Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal remained in the middle of the pitch playing a game of rock, paper, scissors.
For some reason, only one water bottle was available and this was their way of settling who got to drink first. First round? Rock and rock, draw. Second round? Paper and paper, draw.
Third round? Scissors and paper, the spoils — and the water — to Williams.
Williams-Yamal duo has been the star of Spain’s run-up to a quarterfinal against hosts Germany, both on and off the pitch. They tore Georgia apart—Williams scored, assisted another, while Yamal had one assist—then treated fans on the field to some of the newest moves in dance, perfected on TikTok no doubt during the tournament.
A proper bromance is in the making. It was an extra special night for Williams, too, with his brother, teammate Iñaki of Athletic Club, in the stands to support him. — Sam Marsden
