The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a summons to the general public, urging them to disregard a pronouncement made by Ceekay Igara, the former chairman of the party, concerning the sale of nomination forms in advance of the local government election that will take place on November 2.
In a statement that was issued on Wednesday, the acting chairman of the party, Emmanuel Otti, urged members to acquire their nomination forms from the Labour Party secretariat in Umuahia, which is the capital of the state.
He further stated that any information that contradicts the statement should be considered an act of impersonation and referred to the authorities that are responsible for the matter.
The statement read as follows: “The former chairman of the Labour Party in the state, Mr. Ceekay Igara, has issued a radio announcement that has caught the attention of the Labour Party, Abia State chapter. The announcement directed members of the public on where to purchase nomination forms for the party’s primaries in advance of the upcoming local government election in the present state.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission made the decision to stop recognizing Mr. Igara because his tenure had expired along with that of other members of the state and National Working Committees under Julius Abure. Therefore, the public is hereby enjoined to disregard the announcement that was not authorised and that was misleading. This is the reason why the party decided to establish a National Caretaker Committee, which Senator Esther Nenadi Usman will serve as the chairperson of.
“The Labour Party in Abia State is not interested in extorting members of the public or obtaining money from them through deception. As a result, we are prepared to ensure that the sale of forms and selection of candidates is carried out in a responsible, orderly, and peaceful manner in order to guarantee that peace will continue to prevail even after the exercise has concluded.”
