At a time when Kyiv is celebrating 33 years since it declared its freedom from the Soviet Union, Keir Starmer has assured the Ukrainian people that the United Kingdom will continue to support them “today and forever.” As community organisations, municipalities, and parishes all around the United Kingdom prepare to commemorate the anniversary on Saturday, the Prime Minister referred to his message to frontline combatants and individuals who have sought safety in Britain as “crystal clear.”
The supreme soviet of Ukraine reached a consensus on the 24th of August, 1991, that the state should withdraw from the Soviet Union, which was headquartered in Moscow. This decision was supported by Ukrainian people in a referendum held in December of the same year. Starmer made the following statement: “My message to all Ukrainians, whether they are on the frontline or here in your second home in the United Kingdom, is crystal clear: we are with you today and everywhere else.” This is what I said to President Zelenskiy when he sat at our cabinet table, when I underlined, on behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, that it is not only the government of the United Kingdom that is supporting Ukraine; it is all of us.
“We are at your side for as long as it takes,” they said. “Slava Ukraini,” which is a national salute in the country and literally means “glory to Ukraine,” was added by Starmer for good measure. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the government has reported that more over 45,000 Ukrainian recruits had received training on British land. John Healey, the Minister of Defence for the United Kingdom, has also requested that users of social media platforms submit recordings of themselves clapping, cheering, playing music, singing, or ringing bells on Saturday with the hashtag #MakeNoiseForUkraine.
In an article that was published on Saturday, Healey stated that the offensive that Ukraine launched in Kursk had placed “Putin’s Kremlin cabal to the consequences of their aggression” and had planted the seeds of uncertainty within Russia. The incredible fortitude of the Ukrainian people over the course of the past two and a half years has gained them the admiration of the entire world, he continued. “And it has boosted morale among the Ukrainian people,” he said. Putin’s assertions that Ukraine’s attack is a “provocation” are analogous to a bully in a playground expressing his displeasure because his smaller victim has the audacity to fight back. As Ukraine celebrated its national flag day on Friday, Zelenskiy took part in a ceremony to raise the flag in the vicinity of the Verkhovna Rada parliament building.
In a statement that was published on his website, Zelenskiy made a reference to the white, blue, and red flag of Russia. He said, “We are pushing the occupier out of Ukraine and will give no rest to their tricolours.” “We must rebuild Ukraine, our home, after this war so that our Ukrainian blue and yellow flies as it deserves – over proud land and amid safe, free, and European life,” said the leader of the Ukrainian government. On Friday, Zelenskiy met with Narendra Modi in Kyiv. This was the first time that an Indian prime minister had visited Ukraine since the country achieved its independence. Modi has conveyed to the President of Ukraine that he is “personally” prepared to play a role “as a friend” in the process of bringing peace to the people of Ukraine.
