Simone Biles is not holding back when it comes to discussing the controversy that has surrounded an interview in which her husband, Jonathan Owens, was featured.
The eleven-time Olympic medallist shared her perspective on the public outcry that occurred after Owens’ comments on The Pivot podcast in the previous year. She stated that Owens’ comments were “taken out of context” in the second half of the documentary titled “Simone Biles Rising,” which was released on Netflix on Friday, October 25.
When asked if he was the “catch” in his relationship with Biles, the NFL star responded, “I always say that the men are the catch.” This was in response to the question that was posed to him during the interview.
Owens laughed and then replied, “Man, it’s really how she pulled me, man.” This was in response to Channing Crowder, the co-host, asking him how he was able to “pull Simone Biles.” Which brings up the question.
Biles may be seen chuckling off-camera in response to Owens’ comment in the episode; nonetheless, his opinions caused the couple to become embroiled in a social media maelstrom.
As stated in the episode of Simone Biles Rising, “Social media gives [followers] this false sense of reality that they really know who you are and how you function,” Biles, who is 27 years old, described the phenomenon. The majority of the time, people are unable to comprehend the mental toll that it takes, particularly in the lead up to an Olympic year.
“I know we signed up to be judged in the gym, but when you guys are going to talk about him or my family, yeah, I’m going to come at you guys,” the legendary athlete continued. “I know we signed up to be judged in the gym.”
Biles also mentioned that people who do not know her or Owens personally “equate our love to the amount of trophies and medals and accolades that I have, and that is not how you measure love.” Biles and Owens are both extremely successful athletes.
When asked about her voice, the gymnast responded, “Most of the time, I bite my tongue, but now yeah, I have a voice; I’ve always had a voice.” “Just because you didn’t believe that I wouldn’t notice it doesn’t mean that I’m not compelled to respond to it… It’s completely insane.”
Almost immediately after that, Biles stated that she “deleted Twitter.” Additionally, the couple provided their own response through the use of Instagram in real life.
Following the podcast episode last December, Owens responded to criticism and shared photos of himself and his wife on their wedding day. In a couple of more casual shots, he wrote, “Unbothered šā¤ļø Just know we locked in over here š¤š½.”
Biles not only shared his picture on her own Instagram Story, but she also posted a supportive remark on the grid post that her husband had made.
